New Study: Iron Supplements May Boost Women’s Exercise PerformanceWomen who take iron experience a significant improvement in exercise performance, a new study has found.

The results found that women of childbearing age taking iron supplements improved both the highest level they could achieve at 100% exertion (VO2 max), as well as lower heart rates (and thus greater exercise efficiency) at submaximal exertion.

Recently published in the Journal of Nutrition, the study merged data from 22 smaller studies using meta-analysis and performed a systematic review. It is the first time that such benefits of iron on exercise performance have been confirmed.

The lead researcher noted “The mechanism may relate to improved oxygen transport by improved hemoglobin (the protein that carries oxygen through the blood), or improved cardiac function due to direct effects of iron on the muscle.”

The study also confirmed that iron deficiency can impair exercise performance in women.

The lead author concluded, “it may be worthwhile screening women, including women training as elite athletes, for iron deficiency…Athletes, especially females, are at increased risk of iron deficiency potentially, due to their diets and inflammation caused by excessive exercise.”

Unfortunately, typical forms of iron supplements (such as ferrous sulfate) can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as abdominal discomfort, nausea, constipation or diarrhea. They can also cause a metallic taste in the mouth.

Albion® Ferrochel® (ferrous bis-glycinate chelate) is a better form of iron because it does not cause these unpleasant side effects like lower quality forms of iron (such as ferrous sulfate) do. Thanks to it’s patented chelated molecular structure, Albion Ferrochel causes less gastrointestinal upset and also has no metallic taste. It’s also GMO-free, Vegetarian, Hypo-allergenic, Kosher, Halal, and BSE-free.

Additional advantages of Albion Ferrochel include better absorption, safety, and it does not block the absorption of other nutrients (such as calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin E) like typical forms of iron do.

Based in our commitment to superior quality, science-backed ingredients, we choose Albion Ferrochel as the source of iron contained in Prenatal Oxylent. For women looking for a daily multivitamin with iron, Prenatal Oxylent is an excellent choice. Simply add a packet to water and enjoy a refreshing, great-tasting sparkling drink!
