Doctors now recommend taking more magnesium than calcium for bone and heart health
Each packet of Oxylent contains 28% DV of magnesium (113 mg) and 12% DV of calcium. This formulation is based on current nutritional science and the emerging consensus that magnesium supplementation is just as important, if not more important, than calcium for maintaining bone health and heart health.
Many doctors, researchers, and nutritionists now agree that evidence shows taking calcium alone does not promote bone health as we age. In fact, taking calcium alone, without magnesium, can actually cause us more harm than good.
According to Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, “If we consume too much calcium without sufficient magnesium, the excess calcium is not utilized correctly and may actually become toxic, causing painful conditions such as some forms of arthritis, kidney stones, osteoporosis and calcification of the arteries leading to heart attack and cardiovascular disease.”
The importance of balancing magnesium and calcium also helps explain the recent headline-grabbing studies that link calcium supplements to increased risk of heart health issues.
Dr. Dean notes that “magnesium keeps calcium dissolved in the blood. Without the proper balance of magnesium to calcium, about a 2:1 ratio, calcium ends up depositing in kidneys and can create kidney stones, in coronary arteries where it can lead to clogged arteries, and in joint cartilage, rather than in bones where we need it most.”
What makes matters worse is that most people are already low in magnesium—according to Dr. Dean, “the fact that most people do not get their minimum daily requirement of magnesium exacerbates the situation. The high calcium – low magnesium diet of most Americans, when coupled with calcium supplementation, can give a calcium to magnesium imbalance of 4: or 5:1, which constitutes a walking time bomb of impaired bone health and heart disease.”
