We’re in the darkest days of the year here in the northern hemisphere. Less sunshine means your body produces less vitamin D or none at all, depending on where you live.
UVB (Ultraviolet B) is the form of radiation from the sun that your body needs in order to make vitamin D. This time of year, when the sun is further away and at a lower angle in the sky, the UVB portion of the sun’s rays are low to non-existent in many areas.
The further you live away from the equator, the less UVB there is available. For those living north of Atlanta, Georgia, there is not enough UVB to produce vitamin D from about November to February. For those living even further north (north of New York City, for example), vitamin D production ceases from about October to March.
The vitamin D Council recommends a quick and easy way to to estimate if there is any UVB available from sunlight to make vitamin D—check your shadow! If your shadow is longer than you are tall, you aren’t able to make enough vitamin D (due to the oblique angle of the sun).
Since those of us in northern latitudes aren’t able to make the vitamin D we need this time of year, supplementation is crucial to maintaining adequate levels of this very important nutrient.
Vitamin D was an under-appreciated nutrient until recently, but in the last couple of decades, research has increased dramatically. We now know that vitamin D plays many more roles in health than previously thought. Studies now show that vitamin D is essential for everything from immunity and mood, to hormone function, to cardiovascular health. How much do we need? Different organizations recommend different daily intakes. The official U.S. governmental recommendations are 600 I.U./day for children and adults, 800 I.U./day for seniors, but many experts believe these are too low for optimal health. The Endocrine Society recommends 600-1000 I.U./day for children, and 1500-2000 I.U./day for adults. The Vitamin D Council recommends 1000 I.U./day per 25 lbs. of body weight for children, and 5000 I.U./day for adults.
