A major review study has found that as sugar intake increases, so do the odds of life-threatening heart issues. Regardless of age, sex, weight, or physical activity level, when consumption of sugar increased, so did heart health issues.
The largest study of its kind to date, this 15-year study is the first nationally representative study to examine the link between sugar and serious heart issues. More than 40,000 U.S. adults participated, with an average age of 44.
People who consumed the most sugar were four times as likely—a 400% increase—to have life-threatening heart issues as those whose diets included the least added sugar.
The safest amount of sugar intake was less than 10% of daily calories. Yet in 2005-2010 over 70% of adults consumed more sugar than that every day. The average sugar intake for American adults is about 15% percent of daily calories.
