Recent analysis of nutrient intakes in the U.S. shows that a large percentage of Americans do not meet the average requirements of many essential vitamins and minerals through diet alone.
Results showed that less than half of all Americans met the average requirements for several nutrients from food alone, including—vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium, and the B vitamins thiamin and folate.
These results were published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2011, and consisted of an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 2003-2006.
The researchers concluded, “Without enrichment and/or fortification and supplementation, many Americans did not achieve the recommended micronutrient intake levels set forth in the Dietary Reference Intakes.”
This data adds to the decades of overwhelming evidence that Americans are not getting enough of key nutrients that are required for optimal health.
Multivitamins and supplements can help by bringing nutrient intakes closer to the levels needed. The Council for Responsible Nutrition has recently argued that it is irresponsible to ignore decades of nutrition research and fail to recognize that multivitamins can help people safely, effectively, and affordably.
