Pregnant women pass vitamin D on to their newborn babies at nearly 3 times the extent previously thought, according to new research published in the Nutrition Journal.
It had been previously thought that newborns received 19% of their supply of vitamin D directly from their mother. But thanks to a new measuring technique, this new study found that newborns actually receive 56% of their vitamin D directly from their mothers—nearly 3 times the amount than was previously thought.
The lead researcher concluded, “The impact that mothers deficient in vitamin D have on their babies’ levels is a much bigger problem than we thought.”
The reason that this is a big problem is because low levels of vitamin D can have serious long-term consequences to many aspects of child health and development—including respiratory health, mental health, immune health, nervous system health, and insulin and blood sugar function.
Low vitamin D is also detrimental to the health of the mother and can lead to negative pregnancy outcomes as well.
These findings add to a large body of research highlighting how important it is for pregnant women to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D—even women that spend plenty of time in the sun can be at risk for vitamin D deficiency!
